This is the first in a series of posts aimed at educating MLS leaders and vendors about how to create better long-term relationships. When I joined Focus Forward earlier this year, Kevin (McQueen) and I set out to make a big difference through our services by changing the status quo.  We are very passionate about achieving the ultimate result, which is a much-improved experience for both sides – MLS and vendors. _DSF7004_pp

We have worked with some amazing MLSs and vendors over the past 25+ years.  Right now, many are moving to action as they prepare to select a new vendor or implement a new MLS system.  Implementing a system can be a challenging, but with the proper planning and preparation, it can be a rewarding experience. Maybe just maybe, it could also be fun along the way.  (I know, I may be a little warped!) Over the next few weeks, we will explore some things that Real Estate Leaders and their vendor partners can do to have an awesome experience working together.

During the many years, I’ve been leading projects in our industry, there are always those customers you love to work with and then… there are the ones that make your days very long.  For years, I’ve watched as other consultants and vendor user-groups pick on our vendor partners for lower prices or 700 different enhancement requests.  News flash!!!  It takes two to make great things happen.  Here’s what MLS leaders can do to ensure your holding up your end.

  • Clear your existing project schedule – conflicting priorities creates more chaos and results in missed deliverables (I know, it’s hard)
  • Appoint a dedicated project lead – the heavy and empower them with decision-making capabilities
  • When putting together your project team, you will need:
    • Someone who knows your data, MLS & IDX rules and RETS -preferably one with strong communication skills!
    • Communications and marketing whiz
    • Training/education lead
    • Customer Service lead
    • Product Launch plan that works for the diversity / reality of your members
    • Written requirements as part of your contract (often left to the vendor – wrong!)
    • A trusted PM on the Vendor Side. (more on this in future posts)

These elements are crucial to your success.  The good news is if you think you are lacking in any of these areas, there are a couple of ways to fill the gap.

  1. Seek the advice of other MLS/association execs with launch experience
  2. Hire additional staff for the short and long-run (if you need it)
  3. Engage an implementation expert or consultant you know and trust

Stay tuned for more tips on how you can pave your road to success for your implementations!

Cheers,

Lisa Jackson, Focus Forward
